Our Parish

St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, Ajax (Instagram Post (45)) (3).png

Over the last decade, The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has seen an influx of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian faithful mainly from various parts of India and the Middle East.

For all those faithful who move to the GTA one of their immediate need is to connect with the community and worship together. However there has been no church for the faithful based in the city of Toronto and its Eastern Suburbs. This reality was highlighted during the visit to Toronto in December 2011 by our Diocesan Metropolitan, His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos. Rev Fr Dr Daniel Thomas was then appointed by His Grace to cater to the spiritual needs of the faithful in Scarborough and adjoining areas. Since we have been earnestly seeking the intercession of the Mother of God in this need, we have named it the St Mary’s Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

The congregation was elevated as a full fledged parish by the diocesan metropolitan in July 2013. By the grace of God, and through the dedication of faithful, we were blessed to acquire our own church building in 2015, establishing a permanent place of worship and fellowship for our community. In 2018, Rev. Fr. Mathew Thomas took charge as our vicar, guiding the parish in spiritual growth and service. Our church has continued to grow, with the Holy Qurbana celebrated regularly on all Sundays as the central expression of our faith and worship.

We welcome members who wish to join and partner with us to build a church with a Malankara Orthodox ethos that will be a witness for our Lord among the faithful and the community at large. We believe the most visible way God knits people into the community of Christ and draws people into a personal relationship with God is through a church that focuses on WORSHIP, FELLOWSHIP and SERVICE.

We invite you to WORSHIP with us and build and enrich the FELLOWSHIP of believers with your talents and resources and together seek the sustenance and strength of the Holy Spirit to shine for Christ through SERVICE.

The future is absolutely bristling with possibilities, if we believe with St Paul, “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4: 4 -6). We can together glorify God by further holding on to the faith and traditions of our fore fathers… “To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.” (2 Thessalonians 2:14, 15)

Currently, we have regular Holy Qurbana. For further information please contact us.

Our Vision

To conduct Holy Qurbana and other sacramental services according to the doctrines, tenets, traditions and values of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. To propagate and enhance the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Christian faith with a Christ centered focus and pass on this spiritual heritage to succeeding generations. Encourage and enable all to contribute and labour in the Lord’s vineyard with their talents and resources without preference or prejudice. Complete submission and dependency on the guidance of the Holy Spirit; the grace and provisions of our Lord Jesus Christ and upholding the Glory of God in all our endeavors.

Be a witnessing Church, reaching out to the neglected and marginalized; bearing fruits for our Lord in the community

To provide and foster an environment of love and unity and bolster interaction and trust with our sister Orthodox Syrian parishes in particular and foster a spirit of Ecumenism with other Churches in general. Active involvement and liaison with the North East American Diocese under the Diocesan Metropolitan’s leadership, guidance and direction and allegiance to the Malankara Metropolitan and The Catholicose of the East.
